The author himself had an interesting backstory and made a compelling appeal for readership of the book, so I went ahead and read it.
First, the good... congratulations to the author on writing and publishing a book which is something I have never done. The author worked a lot of action into the story and always had the characters on the run. This made you want to keep turning the pages.
Now, the not so good.... the book is written from the first person point of view. This means that the author is pulling triple duty; author, protagonist, and narrator. This created issues for me in determining how much of the author’s views and beliefs bled into the story. I take issue with the treatment and portrayal of women and children I this story. For me, it is one thing to write a misogynistic streak into the protagonist but it is a bridge too at to back it up with follow on supporting dialogue from female characters. The protagonist would say something like, “Women are always saying one thing when they mean something else” and then the author would have a female character say something like, “That’s a woman’s prerogative because we are all hormonal and have periods and are illogical”. The author also had a three year old child flying spaceships, using weapons, and killing characters. Moral, physical, and mental issues with the treatment and capabilities of the 3 year old here.
The author really needed a good editor to smooth out these rough edges and challenge the author’s choices.
